BAPCR members are invited to visit the Royal Collection Trust’s Paintings and Frames Conservation Studios in Windsor on Friday 13th June 2025. The Royal Collection Trust is a charity that cares for, among its million objects, around 7,000 paintings collected by monarchs over the past 400 years. Spread across fifteen current and former royal residences, and many other locations, the paintings collection is one of the best in the world, as well as being a record of the changing tastes of British monarchs. Conservation of the collection therefore involves a unique set of opportunities and challenges. The team of paintings and frames conservators are based at studios housed in Windsor Home Park.

Proposed itinerary

Attendees will need to arrive at Datchet station by 10am. Datchet is on the Southwestern Railways line from Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside, and the 9:03am from Waterloo arrives at Datchet at 9:52am.

Transport will be arranged from Datchet station to the studios (included in visit price).

The visit will start with tea and coffee, followed by a tour of the Paintings Conservation Studio, looking at current treatment projects and learning more about how the department approaches the care of such a widely dispersed collection.

The group will then split in half, with one half visiting the Conservation Framing Technician and the other the Frames Conservation studio; the groups will then swap over.

After lunch, transport will be provided to Windsor Castle. A ticket to visit the Castle (self-guided, usually £31), is included in the visit price. When departing from Windsor Castle, the nearest stations are Windsor & Eton Central (GWR trains to Slough) and Windsor & Eton Riverside (on the Southwestern Railways line to Waterloo).

Please bring a packed lunch as lunch will not be provided and there are no food facilities near the studio. Transport is not included, except for taxis from Datchet to the studio, and from the studio to Windsor Castle.

Visitors will need to complete a security clearance form in advance of the visit.

Please note that Oyster cards cannot be used at Datchet, Windsor & Eton Riverside or Windsor & Eton Central stations, but contactless pay-as-you-go can be used.

Cost: £20 for BAPCR members, and £30 for non-members dependant on places being available.

There is a limited number of £10 student places, for BAPCR student members only.

Limited free places are available to displaced Ukrainian conservators.

There are 15 places available. To book your place, please email the BAPCR Secretary at BAPCRsecretary@gmail.com. Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and priority will be given to BAPCR members. Any places still available after the 20th May will be made available to non members.
