Collections Emergency Response: Limnerslease, Artists’ Home
Following an electrical fire at Limnerslease, the home and studio of artists GF and Mary Watts, on 11 September 2020, the curatorial and collections team responded immediately to assess the impact on the collections on display. They then went on to plan and implement short and medium term condition assessment, conservation treatment plan and preventive conservation response. The following 12 months saw the re-evaluation and re-interpretation of the spaces and collections, re-opening to the public on 6 December 2021, 14 months after the fire. Emma Coburn (Collections Manager, at the time of the fire) will provide a background to the collections incident and the emergency response in the short, medium and long term. Sally Marriott (de László Paintings Conservator, at the time of the fire) will outline the approach to assessing and treating over twenty oil paintings in the context of a global pandemic and post-fire setting. We will conclude with lessons learned and a review of the challenges and achievements following an emergency incident.
