BAPCR evening talk on Wednesday 7th July 2021, via Zoom, at 7pm.

We look forward to welcoming you to an evening talk by Caitlin Southwick who will present:

Sustainability in Paintings Conservation

Sustainability is something that conservators are inherently concerned with. However, applying environmental consciousness to our daily practice may seem complex, and with the numerous other considerations that conservators must take into account, sustainability can fall through the cracks. Putting the environment first may seem to conflict with conservation ethics, but actually win-win-win solutions are achievable – treatments and methods that are good for the object, for the conservator, and for the planet. There are many things that we can already do to start practicing more sustainably.
This talk will address issues of environmental sustainability in paintings conservation for private practitioners and institutions. In addition to providing practical tips and actions, we will address loans, tours, exhibitions, materials and waste, as well as digital sustainability.

Caitlin Southwick is the Founder and Executive Director of Ki Culture and Sustainability in Conservation. She holds a Professional Doctorate in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the University of Amsterdam. Caitlin has worked in the conservation field in museums and on sites around the world, including the Vatican Museums, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Uffizi Gallery, and Easter Island. She is the Secretary of the Working Group on Sustainability for the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and a former Professional Member of the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) Sustainability Committee.

Sustainability in Conservation (https://www.sustainabilityinconservation.com/) focuses on green solutions for the conservation field. The international organization provides and disseminates open access resources and information about sustainable practices for conservators. SiC’s programming focuses on collaborative research projects to advance sustainable solutions for the field, including the Green Solvents Program, which will produce a handbook on green chemistry for conservators and a digital platform for sharing research on the applications and uses of green solvents in the field.
