Annette King and Angelica Bartoletti, who will present:
‘Conservation of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych’
Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, 1962 is one of the iconic works in Tate’s Collection. Acquired by Tate in 1980, it has been in constant demand, either on the wall at Tate Modern or on loan in various international exhibitions of Warhol’s work. It has never been glazed or varnished and has therefore become grey and dull with ingrained dirt and unidentified accretions. The canvases are on their original, rather flimsy stretchers which have been retained as historically important and strengthened as best they can be, with inserts and brackets. The technical examination and cleaning of the Marilyn Diptych has been a fascinating, challenging and sometimes exasperating treatment. It has been a true collaboration between Conservation Scientists and Paintings Conservators. In this talk Annette and Angelica would like to share their learning about Warhol’s materials and techniques, the sensitivities of the various materials, the thoughts behind the chosen cleaning methods and the final outcomes of the project. The method chosen for cleaning was with Peggy 6 gels, used in the Nanorestart treatment of Lichtenstein’s Whaam! The intricacies, difficulties and advantages of using these gels will also be touched upon. The Marilyn Diptych is due to go back on the wall at Tate Modern in February 2025.
Angelica Bartoletti is a conservation scientist at Tate, where she performs imaging and scientific analysis of the works of art in the collection for technical examination, material characterisation and degradation assessment. She completed a PhD in Nanometrology applied to Heritage Science at University College London (UCL) in 2016. Her research interests include assessing the impact of traditional and innovative conservation treatments for cellulose, collagen-based artefacts, modern and contemporary materials (paints and plastics), with a primary focus on cleaning strategies. Angelica has supported Tate conservators and contributed to various cleaning treatments, including Whaam! by Roy Lichtenstein, Addendum by Eva Hesse and, most recently, Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol.
Annette King is a senior Paintings Conservator at Tate. She joined Tate in 1997 and is one of a small team responsible for supporting the programme at Tate Modern. She has a special interest in Modern and Contemporary Paintings and her research thus far has been centred on early 20th-century artists Picabia, Picasso, Ernst and Modigliani, with particular reference to their materials and techniques. Most recently she has worked on the treatment and technical examination of Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, 1962 in collaboration with Tate’s Conservation Science Team. This challenging treatment has initiated Annette into the use of the Peggy Gels produced by the team at CSGI in Florence and their capabilities in the cleaning of sensitive modern art works. Annette is also the lead conservator for the Greenart project, and along with the Conservation Science Team, is evaluating the new sustainable gels produced by CSGI.
