Painted in 1533, Holbein’s portrait of Derich Born was bought by Charles I, given to the Earl of Arundel and then reacquired by Charles II. It is one of seven surviving portraits of German merchants working at the Steelyard in London. Conservation and examination have confirmed Holbein’s unsurpassed skill in rendering light, fabrics and texture in paint. Nicola Christie will talk about the portrait, her recent conservation treatment and the technical analysis undertaken by the J Paul Getty Museum.
After a degree in History and History of Art at Westfield College, University of London, Nicola Christie studied for a diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge. She worked as Assistant Paintings Conservator at the National Galleries of Scotland before joining the National Museums of Liverpool where she was Head of Paintings Conservation for 10 years. She has been Head of Paintings Conservation at Royal Collection Trust since 2009.
