“Seamless Solutions: Treating a contemporary painting with agarose gel” by Olympia Diamond, paintings conservator at Julia Nagle Conservation, Thursday, 22nd April 2021 at 7pm (BST) / 2pm (EST)
Timescape 00:30, 2016, is one of a series of abstract paintings by British artist Darren Almond. Inspired by representations of the cosmos, the paintings explore Almond’s preoccupation with time and space. Timescape 00:30 is composed of water resoluble acrylic paint and gouache on an aluminium panel measuring 210 x 154 cm. It was damaged by rain when on loan. Multiple drip marks destroyed the desired effect of receding space, rendering the painting unexhibitable. This presentation describes the rationale and processes for the treatment of Timescape 00:30 using large plates of agarose gel over the entire painted surface. While the testing phase took many months, the treatment was carried out in a single day. (co-authors: Anna Cooper, Donatella Banti and Julia Nagle*)
Olympia Diamond is a paintings conservator at Julia Nagle Conservation. She completed the Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings at The Courtauld Institute of Art in 2014. During this time, she was a Research Associate Scholar for the Courtauld Gallery and began investigating the treatment of water stains on acrylic paintings, leading to a publication and presentation at the AIC Conference in Chicago in 2017. Since qualifying Olympia has worked for the Guildhall Art Gallery and English Heritage. Before joining JNC Olympia was Assistant Paintings Conservator at the National Museums Liverpool, where she led the conservation treatment and technical investigation of the Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) altarpiece, Virgin and Child in Glory, c. 1673 and its related oil sketch.
