CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

In accordance with the BAPCR’s Constitution two members of the current Council are standing down at the 2008 AGM. Nominations are invited from eligible members who wish to stand as Council members. All Fellows and Associate members of the British Association for Painting Conservator-Restorers may stand for election.

  What is involved?
The BAPCR Council meets, on average, four times throughout the year in the late afternoon/early evening. Most of these meetings will be held at The Art Workers Guild, London , and will be followed by a members meeting. During the rest of the year Council members are expected to participate in discussions and decisions via email, and therefore it is very important that prospective members have regular access to the internet.

Knowledge of charity or association management is not a requirement and we encourage anyone with an interest in the BAPCR as well as the sector as a whole to apply. Travel expenses are paid but any expenses over £100 will need to be discussed with the Secretary first

How does the process work? If you are interested in becoming a Council member please contact the Secretary before midnight on Wednesday 30th April. New Council members will be voted for at the 2008 AGM, to be held at The Art Workers Guild, London on June 25th. Members who were not able to attend the AGM will be informed of the new Council members shortly after. If you wish to discuss becoming a council member please contact Lucy Tetlow on 01603 516237 or secretary@bapcr.org.uk

THE PICTURE RESTORER: VOLUNTEERS AND OPINIONS WANTED

After over 15 years Simon Padfield, editor of The Picture Restorer, has announced that the Spring 2008 edition will be his last.

Because of the importance of this publication to the Association and the wider paintings conservator-restorer sector we would like to get as much feedback from members as we can. For those that can attend we have arranged a meeting to discuss the future development of the journal:

Location: Tate, Millbank, London, SW1P 4RG
Time: Thursday 17th April 2008
Time: 16.30pm

If you are unable to attend we welcome opinions and suggestions about how you feel the Picture Restorer should develop. Please feel free to contact the Secretary by telephone, post or email.

We are also looking for volunteers to take on the roles of Editor and Editorial Committee.

Dennis Baltuskonis (DAB.conservation@sbcglobal.net) writes:

I am writing both to inform and request information regarding the widely used adhesive "BEVA-371". Last November BASF chemicals of Germany halted production of their resin product "Laropal K-80 (formerly known as Ketone-N resin)". Many of your members will recognize that Laropal K-80 is one of the main ingredients of the commercial conservation adhesive "BEVA-371". Hence, no Laropal K-80 means, at some point in the future and assuming that no other commercial source can be found, no BEVA-371.

Laropal K-80, which is described as a "homopolymer of cyclohexanone" or "condensation product of cyclohexanone" according to the MSDS sheet was also used as a final picture varnish for Old Master paintings at one time.

The adhesive, BEVA-371, introduced in the 1970's, has since become the most widely used commercial adhesive in the international art conservation community. I believe a survey of its use in the mid 1980's found over 85% of paintings conservators used this product regularly.

I am assuming that the unavailability of Laropal K-80 will have a tremendous impact on the profession and therefore I am requesting information from the BAPCR in the following areas:

1. Does anyone know of an alternative commercial source for Laropal K-80 resin?
2. Can anyone suggest an appropriate substitute for Laropal K-80 in the BEVA-371 formula?
3. Can anyone suggest alternative adhesive formulations for BEVA-371?
